After almost twelve years as pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, Rev. Duell Tanner has resigned to accept the pastorate of the Cullen Assembly of God at Cullen, Louisiana.
As a teen-ager, Bro. Tanner came to Camden when his father, Rev. A. W. Tanner, accepted the pastorate of the First Assembly of God. He graduated from Camden High School where he won honors in football and track, making all-state center this year.
The summer following his graduation in 1937, he accepted a call to the ministry and attended Southwestern Bible School which was then located in Enid, Oklahoma, but has since been consolidated with the Waxahatchie school as Southwestern Bible School, Waxahatchie, Texas.
Bro. Tanner served as pastor in several places in Arkansas and also served as State Sunday School Director. In 1950 he resigned as State Sunday School Director to become associate pastor with his father here at the First Assembly of God. When Rev. A. W. Tanner retired in 1957 because of ill health, Bro. Duell was called to the local church as pastor.
Bro. Tanner is well known in Camden and Ouachita County. He served two terms as sectional presbyter of the Southwest section. Locally, he has been active in the Ministerial Alliance, the United Charities, Boys’ Club, and other civic work.
His daughter Donna, (Mrs. Johnny Bird) is a graduate of Camden High School and Southern State College, and his son Phil is completing his freshman year at Camden High. Mrs. Tanner has taught in the Harmony Grove School System for several years, and received her M. E. Degree from Auburn University last summer.
A reception for Rev. and Mrs. Tanner is being held at the home of the Kenneth Watson’s at 310 Parker Drive from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 21. It is hoped that the many friends of Rev. and Mrs. Tanner will call by to wish them success in their new undertaking. Bro. Tanner will deliver his farewell message at the local church Sunday, May 25, after which a fellowship dinner will be held at the church in honor of him and his family.
